Academy Awards 2012: Nominations

The nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced earlier today by Academy president Tom Sherak and Winter’s Bone actress, and previous Best Actress nominee, Jennifer Lawrence.

Leading the way is Hugo with eleven nominations, closely followed by The Artist, which nabbed an equally impressive ten.

As well as the aforementioned two, Moneyball, Midnight In Paris, The Help, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, War Horse, The Descendants and The Tree Of Life were all rewarded in the Best Picture category.

Notable absentees this year include Shame, Martha Marcy May Marlene, We Need To Talk About Kevin, The Skin I Live In and Cave Of Forgotten Dreams, which all failed to leave an impression on the Academy members.

The ceremony itself, hosted by Billy Crystal, will take place on February 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California.

  2. First of all, I’m pleased to see Rooney Mara and Melissa McCarthy on the list, both of whom deliver fantastic performances in their respective films.

    On the other hand, I feel the list is missing some up-and-coming talent, and I’m not entirely sure why Tilda Swinton and Shailene Woodley were missed off, especially Woodley who pretty much steals The Descendants from under George Clooney’s feet.

    I don’t know. Last year Jennifer Lawrence was nominated, so I just felt it would have been nice to see someone like Felicity Jones, Elizabeth Olsen (who’s almost flawless in Martha Marcy May Marlene) or Woodley get some recognition. But, then again, Mara’s on the list, so I guess that’s the up-and-coming talent covered.

    It’s a tricky one. I’m both pleased and displeased, eager to see who wins and bored of the whole shebang altogether.

    Oh, and where the hell is Albert Brooks?!

  3. I wonder if Mara would have been nominated if it was not a Fincher film, though. And I honestly don’t know how I feel about the McCarthy nom. But completely agree on the lack of Swinton and Woodley – I was really hoping the latter would get her chance.
