In a move that will make many happy, myself included, Penélope Cruz has signed on to star in Pedro Almodóvar’s next film The Brief Lovers, Deadline has reported. This will mark the first time the duo have worked together since Broken Embraces, which was released three year’s ago.
Cruz will star opposite Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Raúl Arévalo, José María Yazpik and Javier Cámara in what is being described as a “very fresh and brazen comedy about an affair on an airplane” that Almodóvar will direct from his own screenplay.
It was her work with Almodóvar in Live Flesh and All About My Mother that initially led to Cruz’ elevation to the Hollywood A-list. Since then, she has received numerous nominations, and even won an Academy Award for her fiery performance in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Filming on The Brief Lovers, Almodóvar’s follow-up to The Skin I Live In, is expected to take place in and around Madrid over the next few month’s. Cruz will likely shoot her part before starting work on Ridley Scott’s The Counselor.
