Review: Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)
It’s without surprise that Meryl Streep shines as Florence Foster Jenkins in Stephen Frears’ pleasantly amusing biopic of the tone-deaf socialite who fulfilled her wish of singing – if you can it call it that – in front of thousands at the Carnegie Hall. This is a biopic that favours frothy entertainment over tragic drama, thus the darker aspects of Jenkins’ life, such as her battle with syphilis, are never dwelled upon. Like it or not, British-born actor, director and screenwriter Richard Curtis has built himself a successful career by churning out his own brand of light-hearted, audience-friendly romantic comedies. The latest of which, About Time, deviates ever so slightly from the traditional structure to deliver a quirky, refreshingly touching and well acted, yet overlong and ridiculously predictable story of love and close family bonds. Review: The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (2012)
Labelled a fool by the pirate consortium, Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) enters the world famous Pirate of the Year awards in a bid to prove to his crew and his rival captains – Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven), Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) and Peg Leg Hastings (Lenny Henry) – that there’s more to him than meets the eye. After a false start, the crew cross paths with scientist Charles Darwin (David Tennant) who makes a discovery that’s sure to cement the Pirate Captain’s win.
